West Nile Virus Forum

Dakota Midday - 04/08/2004

Bugs are hitting the windshields meaning mosquito season is here. Mosquitoes are not just annoying pests that leave itchy bumps on your arm or leg because they are carriers of a disease that could possibly be deadly--West Nile Virus. On Forum today, Dr. Lon Kightlinger, State Epidemiologist with the Department of Health and Dr. Sarah Patrick with the Center for Rural Health Improvement at USD will discuss the Virus that hit the nation and South Dakota particularly hard last summer. In 2003 more than one thousand South Dakotan’s contracted the disease and 14 of those people died. There was at least one positive case in each county in the state so we’ll also talk to officials in the two communities that had the highest rate of West Nile virus. The Mayor of Rapid City Jim Shaw and Aberdeen’s City Forester Dan Ostrander will join us to talk about their control and prevention efforts.
