Meriwether Lewis Mystery, College Free Speech, S.D. Poet Laureate

Dakota Midday - 07/08/2009

On today's edition of Dakota Midday, host Paul Guggenheimer welcomed the great-great-great-great nephews of Meriwether Lewis, best known for his westward exploration with William Clark who died 200 years ago. Howell Lewis Bowen and Thomas McSwain Jr., members of Lewis' extended family, want his body exhumed to find out if he committed suicide as many historians believe or if he was murdered. Then Paul spoke with Anne Neal, President of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. South Dakota State University was recently featured and praised in their report featuring 40 colleges and universities from across the country that have taken concrete steps to protect the free exchange of ideas. And finally, Paul interviewed South Dakota Poet Laureate David Allen Evans who will be giving a short lecture and reading some of his poetry on Friday at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City.
