Robert Egger, Big Stone II Project, Seth Bullock

Dakota Midday - 07/23/2009

On today's edition of Dakota Midday, host Paul Guggenheimer welcomed Robert Egger, President of the DC Central Kitchen where unemployed men and women learn marketable culinary skills while donated food is converted into balanced meals. He will be in South Dakota next week. Then Paul interviewed Mark Rolfes, Big Stone II Project Manager in a continuation of our discussion of coal power expansion and concerns over air quality and health issues. And finally, a visit with historian David Wolff about his new biography of Seth Bullock.

Each month on Dakota Midday Julia Monczunski features authors, visits South Dakota’s unique bookstores and libraries, and celebrates the joy of reading. This program is produced with the support of the Center for the Book, part of the South Dakota Humanities Council in Brookings. Today Monczunski visits with historian David Wolff about his new biography of Seth Bullock, Deadwood’s first sheriff. But first, Monczunski goes to the Rapid City Public Library to talk with the library's programming associate, Susan Braunstein, about her midsummer book picks.

Susan Braunstein's Book Picks:
Adults: Borderline by Nevada Barr, The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon, Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay, The Weapon by David Poyer
Young Adults: Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, Warriors Series by Erin Hunter
Young Children: Mr. Maxwell's Mouse by Frank and Devin Asch
