Gubernatorial candidate Dennis Daugaard, Plains Indian War Prisoners, SD Smoke-Free Law

Dakota Midday - 10/07/2009

On 10/7/09, South Dakota Lieutenant Governor and 2010 Gubernatorial candidate Dennis Daugaard joins host Paul Guggenheimer for a discussion of what he will do if elected. Then Paul interviews Columbia College history professor Brad Lookingbill, author of the book "War Dance at Fort Marion: Plains Indian War Prisoners." His book focuses on Indian prisons of the late 19th century when Native Americans suspected of terrorizing white settlers pushing West were confined in a Florida prison that some say was not unlike the one at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. And finally, Paul speaks with Jennifer Stalley of the American Cancer Society. Pre-trial motions were heard yesterday in Hughes County in the case for the South Dakota smoke-free law. Stalley says the law may not be eligible for a public vote due to a provision in the state's referral process that doesn't allow a vote on laws for the immediate preservation of public health.
