Remembering Former Lt. Governor Bill Dougherty, and Executive Officers of the First Persian Gulf War

Dakota Midday - 07/06/2010

On today's Dakota Midday, Paul Guggenheimer talks with former South Dakota Senator George McGovern. He shares his memories of former South Dakota Lieutenant Governor Bill Dougherty, who died over the weekend. Dougherty was one of McGovern's top advisors during his 1972 presidential bid.

Paul also revisits part of an interview with Dougherty on the 40th anniversary of Robert Kennedy's assassination. Dougherty ran R.F.K.'s presidential campaign in South Dakota. Click here to hear more from that interview.

Next, the political junkies join the show. Kevin Woster, columnist and reporter for the Rapid City Journal, and Jon Hunter, publisher of the Madison Daily Leader, share their memories of Dougherty.

Finally, Army National Guard Colonels Arthur "Bucky" O'Connor and David Gray talk about their experiences in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. They were executive officers during the first Persian Gulf War.
