Government Shutdown, "Journey for Freedom," From Augustana to Africa

On this edition of Dakota Midday, host Paul Guggenheimer talks with Democratic Senator Tim Johnson. They discuss whether a deal can be reached in Congress to avoid a federal government shutdown on Friday.

Peter Vodenka is the author of "Journey for Freedom." It is about his boyhood under strict communist rule and his harrowing defection on foot from "Iron Curtain" Czechoslovakia with his wife and two small children. He talks about the book and his upcoming speech before the Black Hills Veterans Writing Group this weekend.

Also, former Augustana College graduate Monique Schmidt talks about living and working in Africa. She is the program director for the Akilah Institute for Women in Kigali, Rwanda. She is presenting "Reciprocal Transformations: A Discovery of Soul Through Service from Augustana to Africa."
