Back to School: Sioux Falls, Irene-Wakonda and Plankinton, and "Railroaded"

Dakota Midday - 08/25/2011

It's a "Back to School" edition of Dakota Midday. DeeAnn Konrad is with the Sioux Falls Public Schools System. She talks about how it is making adjustments in the wake of budget cuts.

The Irene-Wakonda School District reacted to the cuts by initiating a four-day school week. Elementary School Principal Bruce Bailey discusses the change and what it will do to curriculum, activities, and employees.

Plankinton Schools had an increase in enrollment and not enough teachers. That prompt it to move back the starting date. Plankinton Elementary School Principal LeeAnn Nussbaum discusses how the adjustment was made, and why.

Richard Whit is the author of Railroaded-The Transcontinentals and the making of modern America. He talks about the book, how railroads shaped the country, and what affect they will have on the future.
