SDHSAA Meeting, Smithsonian Touring Exhibit and Music from James Van Nuys and Bob Fahey

Dakota Midday - 03/20/2012

Yesterday, the South Dakota High School Activities Association decided to add a seventh class for high school football in the state (11AAA) which will include South Dakota's largest schools.  SDHSAA Executive Director Wayne Carney joins today's show from Pierre to talk about the decision and his recommendation to consolidate state tournaments in volleyball, wrestling and boys and girls basketball with Sioux Falls being the permanent site beginning in the 2015-16 school year.

"New Harmonies: Celebrating America's Roots Music" is a touring exhibit from the Smithsonian Institute now on display at the Sturgis Public Library.  The exhibit, which will also travel to Aberdeen, Brookings, Rapid City, Deadwood and Sioux Falls this year, tells the American musical story through photographs, instruments, lyrics and artist profiles.  Host Karl Gehrke is joined by Smithsonian Project Director Robbie Davis.

Guitar masters James Van Nuys and Bob Fahey will perform "History of the Blues" Thursday night at the Sturgis Public Library in conjunction with the Smithsonian touring exhibit.  They'll discuss and play blues from the early 1900s through the present day, featuring the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson, Robert Cray, Eric Clapton and Keb Mo.  Van Nuys and Fahey play live from SDPB's Rapid City studio.
