Dakota Political Junkies, Solutions and KONY 2012

Dakota Midday - 03/21/2012

The Dakota Political Junkies, David Montgomery of the Rapid City Journal and Jon Hunter of the Madison Daily Leader, talk about Governor Daugaard's vetoes and Matt McGovern's candidacy for the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission.

Rapid City teacher Jackie Swanson talks about Anti-Street Harassment Week.  Swanson has founded the group Solutions, an organization aiming to curb drop-out rates among young Native American women.  Solutions is hosting a sidewalk drawing project this afternoon around Memorial Park in Rapid City to promote the values of respect for women and girls.

KONY 2012, a short video about the African war criminal Joseph Kony, has been viewed over 84-million times on YouTube.  For 25 years, Kony and his forces have been abducting children, using them as soldiers and slaves and killing and maiming thousands of Ugandans.  People have since sprung into action, donated money to Invisible Children and spread the word with the hope of having Kony arrested and brought to justice.  Since its release, the video and producer Jason Russell have come under scrutiny.  Dr. Michael Kevane, who teaches courses on African Economic Development at Santa Clara University and Marc Ellison, a photojournalist based in Vancouver, British Columbia, discuss KONY 2012 which has become a social media phenomenon.  Ellison was in Uganda last summer and interviewed 40 women who were abducted by Kony's Lord's Resistance Army.
