Badlands Observatory, Rick Abrahamson, Gardening

Dakota Midday - 04/23/2012

Dakota Midday is hosted by Karl Gehrke in Vermillion, SD.

The Badlands have some of the darkest skies in North America, which makes the area ideal for an observatory. Ron Dyvig founded the Badlands Observatory in 1998.  It's been primarily used for astronomical research relating to asteroids through participation in NASA's Spaceguard Program. Badlands Observatory has been credited with the discovery of 25 main-belt asteroids. One of them has been granted the name 26715 SOUTH DAKOTA.

Rick Abrahamson is a horticulture teacher at Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls. Spring came early with warmer than usual temperatures, but over the past couple weeks temperatures cooled down with a couple nights of frost. We talk with Abrahamson about gardening and the effects of the changing spring weather.
