"The Thick Dark Fog," Dr. Nettleman, Civil Rights Conference

Dakota Midday - 05/01/2012

Dakota Midday is hosted by Karl Gehrke in Vermillion, SD.

Dr. Mary Nettleman is the Dean of the Sanford-USD School of Medicine.  Nettleman is the 14th dean of the medical school, succeeding Rodney Parry. During Parry's tenure, the medical school developed a new pediatrics residency program, the School of Health Sciences was created, the state-of-the-art Lee Medical Building was built in Vermillion and a Clinical Skills and Simulation Center on the Sioux Falls Medical School campus is scheduled for completion in 2012.

Walter Littlemoon is a 69 year old Lakota man born and raised in Wounded Knee, South Dakota.  At the age of five, he was removed from his family to attend a federal government boarding school where his culture, language and spirituality were suppressed. "The Thick Dark Fog" was produced by Randy Vasquez and Jonathan Skurnik and profiles Walter's journey to heal himself and his community and to reclaim his heritage.  The film's title comes from Walter's own self-diagnosis of the state of mind he lived in for so many years until he began to tell his story and heal from his childhood trauma.

SDPB's Kealey Bultena attended yesterday's Civil Rights Conference in Sioux Falls.  She gets comments from South Dakota Tribal Relations Secretary J.R. LaPlante, Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez, U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson and activist Judy Shepard.
