1972 Rapid City Flood, Asthma Awareness and Gardening Advice

Dakota Midday - 05/07/2012

Forty years later, myths about the 1972 Rapid City flood persist.  Andrew Detwiler, department head of Atmospheric Sciences of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology; Mark Anderson of the South Dakota Water Science Center; and Susan Sanders, National Weather Service Coordination Meteorologist, talk about the impact of rain patterns, hydrology and geology of the '72 flood.  They will be giving a presentation at the Journey Museum entitled, "Cloud-Seeding, Dam Breaking and 500 Year Floods: '72 Myths Perpetuated/Debunked."

May is Asthma Awareness Month and Dr. Stephen Apaliski joins Dakota Midday from Texas to talk about his new book, "Beating Asthma: Seven Simple Principles."  He's joined by Darcy Ellefson, Clinical Coordinator at Sanford's South Dakota Asthma Institute in Sioux Falls.  Ellefson is a certified asthma education instructor and a registered respiratory therapist.  She talks about prevention, education and resources available to South Dakotans.

Norm Evers of Norm's Greenhouse in Aurora joins Karl Gehrke for Dakota Midday's bi-weekly gardening segment.  He talks about what recent rains mean for lawns and gardens in the region.
