Dakota Midday - 05/08/2012

Sharon Vestal, an associate professor of mathematics and statistics from SDSU, talks about the Mathematics Teacher Education Partnership, which is an effort of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities' Science and Mathematics Teacher Imperative to redesign secondary mathematics teacher preparation programs. The South Dakota team also includes Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, the Sioux Falls School District, and the South Dakota Department of Education

John Remus, chief of the Hydrologic Branch for the Omaha District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, joins Dakota Midday. Remus visits about the Corps' damage assessment of the spillway slabs at Gavins Point Dam. The investigation is scheduled to begin at 8 AM Wednesday and will include the use of ground penetrating radar and other investigative methods. Flows from Gavins Point will remain at zero for no more than 8 hours.

Rapid City writer and editor Eric Lochridge joins Dakota Midday, who had just published "After Long Busyness: Interviews with Eight Heartland Poets," an ebook that compiles a series of interviews originally conducted for his blog entitled "After Long Busyness." The interviews reveal a surprising diversity in the poetry community in South Dakota.
