Expanding Native Entrepreneurship Initiative, Paul Schiller and Gardening Tips

Dakota Midday - 05/21/2012

Tanya Fiddler, Chairperson of the South Dakota Indian Business Alliance, and Krystal Langholz, Executive Director of Hunkpati Investments, talk about the new initiative that will utilize the successful model of Native community development financial institutions (CDFIs) to expand access to fair lending products into all nine of South Dakota's reservation communities. The Initiative will create the first-ever statewide Native loan fund, which will provide micro-loans up to $10,000, paired with customized assistance to guide entrepreneurs through the process of establishing a reservation-based business.

Photographer Paul Schiller joins Dakota Midday to talk about his storm photography that he has been doing for the past eight years. Schiller's not interested in capturing the destruction caused by severe weather; instead, he illustrates the unique majesty and beauty massive storm cells create as they cross the prairie. Schiller's photos are the centerpiece of a new exhibit at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls called "Beauty in the Beast." The exhibit is a collaboration with four other South Dakota artists who are using Schiller's images for inspiration as they create their own works of art, each in different medium.

Julie Hoffman from East River Nursery talks about some gardening tips. Hoffman talks about the effect recent weather conditions have had on gardens and yards in the area.
