Remembering the '72 Flood; SDPB Radio Documentary, Greta Chapman and Reid Riner, and Remembrance + Renewal

Dakota Midday - 06/07/2012

Part One of the Rapid City Flood Documentary features voices of flood survivors. Part Two features Charles Michael Ray talking with scientists whose research shows 1972-sized floods are more common than usually thought.

Greta Chapman, Director of the Rapid City Public Library, and Reid Riner, Director of the Minnilusa Pioneer Museum at the Journey Museum discuss the importance of flood records and archives in education and planning for the city's future.

Mary Maxon, curator of exhibits at the Dahl Arts Center, and artist Mary Jo Marcy talk about art as a way to commemorate the flood's anniversary. The Dahl Arts Center opened a new exhibit today, "The Rapid City Flood: Remembrance + Renewal."

A special thanks to KOTA for their Archived Newsreels and Dr. Keith Johnson and Verne Sheppard for sharing their own audio and print archives.
