This week we're getting a musical taste of Cairo thanks to the Egyptian pop band Wust el Balad - they performed in Hill City in October of 2011. Billed as one of the most popular groups in the Arab world, Wust el Balad translates to "downtown" - their sound combines the ancient music of the Egyptian desert with the lively street music of Cairo. During the Egyptian revolution, one of Wust el Balad's songs actually became an anthem for the throngs of protestors in Tahrir Square.
Wust el Balad came to Hill City through Arts Midwest World Fest, a program that connects small and mid-size Midwestern towns to world cultures. Their motto is "Think global, here it local."
