Frank Carroll talks about the massive attacks of pine beetles to the Black Hills area. Forest managers, scientists and policy makers are studying the most recent pine beetle attacks from the summer of 2011, looking for clues about the scope and scale of new attacks expected throughout the Black Hills by early August. Frank Carroll is a forest management consultant specializing in mountain pine beetle mitigation and hazard fuels reduction. Carroll is a second generation forest manager, veteran firefighter and former Black Hills National Forest Public Information Officer. He spent the last six months helping private, local and state land managers to work to protect significant forested areas, communities like Custer and individual houses and trees from fire and beetles.
Dave Levesque has been chosen by the South Dakota chapter of the American Culinary Federation as Chef of the Year for the state. Dave joins Dakota Midday to talk about his recent achievement and his joy of cooking.
Writer and historian Bill Markley talks about the March of 1886 incident between Theodore Roosevelt and three desperados who stole Roosevelt's rowboat from his ranch on the Little Missouri River. Bill Markley canoed a section of the river Roosevelt had taken in his pursuit of the thieves. Markley is telling the story of Roosevelt's adventure on Friday over the noon hour at the Historic Adams House.
