Dakota Political Junkies, Sioux Falls Arts Impact and Lakota Voice Project

Dakota Midday - 06/20/2012

Jon Hunter, publisher of the Madison Daily Leader, and Seth Tupper, editor of the Mitchell Daily Republic, talk about recent political news, which include State Senator Stan Adelstein requesting an investigation into Secretary of State employee Pat Powers' on-line campaign business, the South Dakota Education Association turning in signatures to refer HB 1234 to the November ballot and the fallout from the oddities in Mitchell's June 5th elections.

Nan Baker, Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Arts Council, and Tim Hoheisel, the incoming Executive Director, talk about a 2010 study that examined the economic impact of the arts in the community. The local results of the national Arts & Economic Prosperity IV study directed by Americans for the Arts and coordinated locally by the Sioux Falls Arts Council shows that the arts make a significant contribution to the local economy. Specifically, the non-profit arts and culture industry generated $35,037,688 in annual economic activity in the Sioux Falls area, supported 1,324 full-time equivalent jobs, and generated $1,470,000 in local and state governement revenues.

Jason Alley, owner of the Rapid City advertising agency Message, and Karissa Eifert, Communications and Events Director for the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce, talk about the group of Oglala Lakota College business students and professionals from the Black Hills Chapter of the American Advertising Federation who are launching a traditional advertising and social media campaign to fight the epidemic of youth suicide on the reservation. The Lakota Voice Project is launching Friday, June 22nd, with an art installation viewing from 4-7 at the Little Wound Elementary Auditorium in Kyle.
