SD Crime Report, Marsha Bemko and John Shipley

Dakota Midday - 07/10/2012

Jacob Jantzer, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Rural Studies at South Dakota State University, discusses the 2011 Crime in South Dakota report. Attorney General Marty Jackley released the report yesterday. This report is compiled by the Attorney General's Criminal Statistical Analysis Center (SAC). The SAC Unit is the primary clearinghouse for criminal justice statistical data for South Dakota. Drug and assault arrests climbed statewide in 2011 while driving under the influence arrests remained steady. Despite some of the higher crime numbers, Jackley says the criminal statistics reflect that South Dakota remains a relatively safe place to live as a result of law enforcement efforts, strong community involvement and a supportive legislature.

Marsha Bemko, Executive Producer of "Antiques Roadshow," talks about the program's visit to South Dakota and an all new series called "Market Warriors" premiering Monday, July 16th. The popular PBS show comes to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City on Saturday. Part adventure, part history lesson, and part treasure hunt, the nine-time Emmy Award-nominated show is now in its 16th season. In each hour-long episode, specialists from the country's leading auction houses - Bonhams and Butterfields, Christie's, Doyle New York, Skinner and Sotheby's - and independent dealers from across the nation offer free appraisals of antiques and collectibles. Episodes from Rapid City will air next season.

John Shipley, sportswriter who covers the Minnesota Twins for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, talks about the team at the midway mark in the season. Tonight's All-Star game in Kansas City marks the traditional half-way point in the 2012 baseball season. Minnesota Twins fans hoping for a rebound after last year's disastrous 99 loss season have had little to cheer about this year. The team has one of the worst records in baseball. With 36 wins and 49 losses, the Twins are last in the American League's Central Division.
