George McGovern Nomination 40th Anniversary, Laura Ingalls Wilder Autobiography and Orlando Chamber Soloists

Dakota Midday - 07/12/2012

Tom Lawrence, assistant editor of the Mitchell Daily Republic, talks about the 1972 Democratic National Convention, where South Dakota Senator George McGovern officially won his party's nomination to run for president. At the time, McGovern and his supporters felt they were creating a new Democratic Party, one that welcomed more women, minorities and young people. 1972 was the first year people age 18 and older could vote in presidential elections.

Nancy Tystad Koupal, director of the South Dakota State Historical Society Press, talks about the new book, "Pioneer Girl," which is an autobiography about Laura Ingalls Wilder. Laura Ingalls Wilder's famous children's books are available all over the world, but one of her stories has never been published. The SDSHS Press has successfully negotiated the worldwide, exclusive rights to publish Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Pioneer Girl" in 2013. The Little House Heritage Trust, the administrators of Wilder's estate, granted the rights to publish the book to the SDSHS Press partly as a result of the Press's award-winning 2007 biography, "Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer's Life," by Pamela Smith Hill.

Michael Hill, executive director and bassist for the Orlando Chamber Soloists, talks about the 5th anniversary of the ensemble's Black Hills Chamber Music Festival residency. The Orlando Chamber Soloists and the Chamber Music Festival now serve four counties in Western South Dakota including the communities of Lead/Deadwood, Sturgis, Rapid City, Rockerville, and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The group's newest program this summer is Music in Our Community, where area high school and college students perform as individual members of the Orlando Chamber Soloists. The ensemble is in concert Saturday at the Dahl Arts Center at 7 pm.
