This week, we bring you to the world of the Louisiana Creoles with the legendary Terrence Simien and his band the Zydeco Experience. They were the headlining band for the 2011 JazzFest held at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls. We're featuring this performance tonight because the 2012 JazzFest is happening next week - July 26th-28th.
For nearly 30 years, Terrence Simien has been on a mission - to share Creole culture with the world. His ancestors were one of the first Creole families to settle in southwestern Louisiana, and he was mentored by the great Zydeco music pioneers. His mission has taken him to at least 40 countries and put him in almost a dozen films. He got the Grammies to establish a new category for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album, and he developed a curriculum for children to learn about the Creole culture and Zydeco music.
