John Hult, Dr. David Wolff and Gardening Tips with Norm Evers

Dakota Midday - 08/13/2012

John Hult, reporter for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, talks about the Yankton Sioux Tribe and the impact of drugs in the reservation. In July, the state was shocked by the death of RieLee Lovell. The two-year old's body was in the closet of a rural Wagner tribal housing project for at least a day and a half before her caregivers called 911. They've been accused of ignoring the toddler's lifeless body and endangering five other children while under the influence of methamphetamine, marijuana and prescription pills. The story brought to light rampant drug abuse in the impoverished neighborhoods of the Yankton Sioux Tribe. Hult has been covering the story and discusses the difficulties and challenges in fighting drug abuse in the community.

Dr. David Wolff, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Black Hills State University and chair of the Deadwood History, Inc. Board of Directors, talks about his upcoming lecture this Friday. He'll present the lecture "The Deadwood Factor: Exploring Deadwood's Violent Past," during the Historic Adams House's "Picnic on the Lawn" series at noon Mountain. Wolff examines what motivated violence, who was involved and how it changed over time.

Norm Evers of Norm's Greenhouse and Nursery in Aurora joins Dakota Midday to discuss gardening. He'll talk about how the slightly cooler weather and rain has affected the region's gardens and yards after a long spell of hot and dry weather.
