Back to School, Lewis and Clark and Forestburg Melons

Dakota Midday - 08/20/2012

South Dakota Education Secretary Melody Schopp talks about education changes for the school year. Thousands of students are back in the classroom today. Schopp talks about the recently released state student report card, back to school items, new policies and things students and parents need to know as the new school year begins.

Lewis and Clark Executive Director Troy Larson and Red Arndt, chairman of the Lewis and Clark Regional Water System board, talk about the Lewis and Clark water system. After two decades, the Lewis and Clark Regional Water System is finally up and running, but the pipeline is still not complete. Nine of the twenty communities in the system are still not receiving water and it's uncertain whether the system will get the money needed to finish the pipeline. Larson says the funding shortfall and lack of significant process has forced a number of business to delay projects. Nevertheless Larson is glad the system is pumping water after years of fighting for funding. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 am at the treatment plant near Vermillion.

Kelly Larson from Larson's Melons On the Curve talks about Forestburg melons. Kelly talks about the popularity and history of Forestburg melons. At the peak, there were around 14 different melon stands between Forestburg and Huron. Today there are three. Larson's stand opened around July 25 this year, making it their earliest start ever.
