Kathleen Sebelius, Judon Fambrough and Rapid City Sculpture

Dakota Midday - 08/21/2012

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius discusses the challenges tribes face involving their health. She's visiting South Dakota through today. Sebelius is visiting tribal communities across the state to discuss the health challenges that tribes face while getting a firsthand look at HHS programs, including the Administration for Children and Families, the Indian Health Service and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Judon Fambrough, an attorney with the Real Estate Center at Texas A & M University, talks with SDPB Radio's Gary Ellenbolt about oil and gas leases. Fambrough has advice that may be useful to South Dakota landowners looking at lucrative oil and gas leases. He says the money may be good, but don't surrender your property rights. Fambrough is a 35-year member of the Center Staff and specializes in property rights during lease negotiations in his publication, "Hints on Negotiating an Oil and Gas Lease." The guide covers such topics as leasing provisions, duration of lease, royalty clauses and surface damages. While it was written for Texas landowners, Fambrough says the information can be useful for other states as well.

Pat Wyss joins Dakota Midday to talk about Destination Rapid City. After eight months of review, Destination Rapid City has invited five highly recognized artists to submit concepts for the Main Street Square artwork. "After a rigorous jurying process, these five artists surfaced as meeting the committee's desire for content, public involvement and safety," said Pat Wyss, of Wyss Associates, Inc., project manager for the work. The selection committee was formed by the Rapid City Arts Council at the request of Destination Rapid City. The public has a chance to meet the artists during a reception in Main Street Square on August 22, 2012 from 5:30 to 7 pm. A total of 88 artists submitted applications. From those 88, 31 were invited to submit a conceptual proposal. Destination Rapid City hopes to have an artist under contract by January 1.
