Amy Inversen-Pollreisz, Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether and Michael Feinstein

Dakota Midday - 09/13/2012

Amy Iversen-Pollreisz, Deputy Secretary of the State Department of Social Services, talks about suicide prevention. Governor Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed September 9-15 as "Suicide Prevention Week" in South Dakota. Suicide occurs across all age, economic, social, and ethnic boundaries, and is now the tenth leading cause of all deaths in the United States and the ninth leading cause of all deaths in the state of South Dakota. This year's theme, "Collaborations in Suicidology: Bridging the Disciplines," emphasizes the need for all health care professionals to work together, at the local level, to help prevent future suicides in the state.

Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether discusses growth in Sioux Falls. In late August, Sioux Falls held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Denny Sanford Premier Center. On Wednesday, there was another groundbreaking ceremony for the Hilton Garden Inn and Convention Center in downtown Sioux Falls. And after several weeks of construction on the runway, the Sioux Falls Regional Airport holds a ribbon cutting on Friday for the recent upgrades.

Pianist and singer Michael Feinstein talks about the new public radio series, "Song Travels." "Song Travels with Michael Feinstein" is a new 13-hour special series from NPR and South Carolina ETV Radio, hosted by five-time Grammy-nominated performer Michael Feinstein. In each program, Feinstein sits down with a musical guest to explore American Popular Song and the intimate journey singers and songs take with one another, each changing the other through the course of a lifetime. The line-up of top performers spans the musical spectrum and includes Liza Minneli, Bette Midler, violinist Joshua Bell, Pink Martini pianist Thomas Lauderdale, U.K. pop sensation Rumer, and actor David Hyde Pierce. "Song Travels" airs on SDPB Radio Sunday nights at 9 pm Central.
