Appropriations committee adopts revenue estimates

The South Dakota Joint Appropriations committee has adopted revenue estimates for the fiscal 2013 budget. The committee has also revised revenue projections for the 2012 budget which ends on July 1st.
Senator Larry Tidemann of Brookings says the appropriations committee took a cautious but optimistic approach to the state’s budget.
“I think we’re in a situation where South Dakota is doing very well economically. Its growing and we don’t want see anything push us backwards but we’re part of a larger family called the whole United States and right now our country is not growing as rapidly in the economy as South Dakota,” says Tidemann.
The Joint Appropriations committee adopted a revenue estimate of around 1.3 billion dollars for fiscal year 2013. This is over 9 million dollars more than what Governor Daugaard anticipated in his December budget address. The committee also adopted a revised budget for fiscal year 2012 leaving them with an extra 12 million dollars than previously projected. Lawmakers will begin work on passing a final budget next week.
