State Democrats Critical of Republican Education Reform
Air Date:03/02/2012
The 2012 State Legislature is wrapping up in Pierre.
The session saw contentious debates over education and the budget.
South Dakota Democrats blame the Republicans for bowing to big business special needs and the will of the governor.
Bernie Hunhoff the Senate Minority leader cites legislation like the education reform package -- House Bill 1234 that saw major public opposition but was passed anyway.
"And it's a result of one party government that's been going on for what now 30 to 40 years in South Dakota the same party has controlled both houses of the legislature and the governor's office and the result I don't know if there is a better word to describe it it's kowtowing," says Hunhoff.
Governor Dennis Daugaard and republican leaders counter that the education reform bill passed this session gives 15- million dollars to local school districts to spend on teachers as they see fit.
