President Obama is apparently on the verge of a funding decision for the war in Afghanistan. Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin says she is meeting with administration officials to get a complete picture of the situation. She says her main concern with the war is strategy.

“Whether one believes that our resources there now are adequate or that more troops or a civilian surge of assistance is necessary I think that is secondary to ‘What is the mission? What are our objectives?’” says Herseth Sandlin. “I believe that they have to be more modest objectives in light of how things have evolved in Afghanistan.”

Herseth Sandlin says we have a clear national security interest in border areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan. She says those areas could provide safe harbor to Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Herseth Sandlin says public discontent and the cost of the war in men and money should shift the focus to measured goals and an understanding of the mission.
