FROM PICTURES TO WORDS

When it airs: Overnight schedule

Professional Development; 30-minutes
Documenting the process by which children learn to read and write, FROM PICTURES TO WORDS follows children ages four through eight at progressive stages of literacy. Culled from over a hundred hours of footage of classroom and home learning, the program captures the exciting experience of discovering the joys of the written word. Children are shown at many points along the road to mastery, from those who are just beginning to tell their own stories, to those who can draw pictures to convey narratives, to those "dictating" captions to the teacher, and finally, at the most advanced levels, creating sophisticated poems and prose all by themselves.

Hosted by opera star Dawn Upshaw and with expert guidance from the Child Development Institute at Sarah Lawrence College, FROM PICTURES TO WORDS provides practical suggestions to parents and teachers on how children can be encouraged and supported to acquire the skills necessary for a lifetime of writing and reading.
