Kids' Quest: Investigators on the Job demonstrates in an engaging manner the
scientific method approach to problem solving. Supporting resources, such as a
dynamic web site and several downloadable teacher materials, round out this
engaging program for educational use.
Background: In 2006, the Education & Outreach Department at SDPB was awarded a
SciGirls outreach grant from Dragonfly TV to conduct a science-based project
that would engage girls in science activities and inspire them to consider
science-based careers. "SciGirls are Heating Things Up", a week-long day camp,
was the resulting project of that grant. SDPB Television produced the Kids'
Quest: Investigators on the Job episode starring the girls at the camp, their
instructors, and a fun storyline about a wacky science teacher on his way to a
conference. The SDPB TV production team crafted an entertaining episode which
demonstrates how students used the scientific method to solve the problems
encountered while their teacher was away. The girls were visited by a female
builder from the Sioux Falls area, and she was also included in the episode. Her
presence reinforced the fact that girls can aspire to work in any profession.
Most of the Kids' Quest: Investigators on the Job episode was filmed on location
with the girls. They learned a lot about producing a television program as well
as learning the science concepts they completed during the camp. Kids' Quest:
Investigators on the Job is supported with science demonstrations, experiments,
a teacher guide and the streaming video of the episode on the companion web page
found on the station's web site. Education materials were developed for South
Dakota teachers. The teaching materials developed during the project correlate
to over 20 South Dakota State Science Standards for grades 6th - 9th.
