Topics Covered in the Show

Introduction

The Kid's Quest episode "A Chat with the Governor" explores many important topics facing South Dakota residents over the next few years. Governor Rounds answers questions on approximately 20 different topics. Governor Rounds gives his opinions and insight on topics ranging from Canadian pharmaceuticals to abortion and Planned Parenthood. 

Governor Rounds is one of the most powerful leaders of our state. He has viewpoints and information that we may agree with or disagree with. Your students need to realize everyone has an opinion and an individual viewpoint. Our experiences, knowledge, and education guide our choices and viewpoints.

The activity below will encourage your students to learn more about a political issue and take a side. The students will investigate a current South Dakota political topic. Some of the topics introduced are very controversial.

Materials:

List of topics covered in the show and information form. Click
Internet access
Current magazines
Library access
Newspapers
State House web site information found on SDPB.org Click

Procedure:

1. The students should choose a topic from the list provided.
2. The students should research both sides of the controversial issue chosen using
magazines, books, newspapers and the Internet.
3. The students should complete the Topic Sheet and Information Form.
4. The students should watch the show.
5. The students should complete the last question on the Topic Sheet and Information form.
6. An extra line sheet is included which can be copied and used for any question if more
room is needed.
