Governor Mike Rounds delivered his annual State of the State address Tuesday. The governor took time to highlight what he sees as a variety of accomplishments over his two terms in office. Rounds says he's especially proud of the progress made in higher education.
The governor was in a reflective mood during his address to the legislature. Rounds says since he first took office, enrollment has increased at the state's universities and fifteen million dollars in scholarships has been distributed to South Dakota students. At a time when the economy is struggling, Rounds says the opportunity to achieve advanced degrees is keeping young people from leaving the state.
"Not only do these new graduate degree programs allow out students to stay here in South Dakota, but they also give them the extra knowledge and skills to create new businesses and create jobs right here in our state instead of leaving our borders," says Governor Rounds.
Rounds says the number of PhD graduates in South Dakota has more than doubled since 2002. He says there are 23 new doctorate degrees and 24 new Masters degree programs developed in the last eight years.
