Chief Justice David Gilbertson delivered his state of the judiciary address today. He spoke about the increased stress on South Dakota’s probation system. Gilbertson says some probation officers in the state have case loads of 150 people, nearly twice the recommended amount.
Gilbertson says the Unified Judicial system will soon update its computer system to better handle the large amounts of paperwork it goes through. He says those who use the system will pay for the changes by an increase in fees. For example, those who are convicted of a DUI will pay 20 dollars more
Gilbertson says legislators also need to be aware of increased legal concerns for the elderly.
