By Jenifer Jones Chief Justice David Gilbertson says the South Dakota Supreme Court could see an increase in cases as a result of the economy. Chief Justice Gilbertson says he anticipates more crime in some areas. He says there could possibly be more DUIs, drug abuse, bad checks, and domestic abuse. "Many people have lost a job or home or both," Gilbertson says. "For others, the stress of an increasing debt or an uncertain future increases anxiety. It invites attempted escapes from the dreary reality they have, through the abuse of alcohol or drugs." Gilbertson says the only real solution is a complete reversal of the economic situation. He says in the meantime, the court system is trying to be as understanding as possible while still applying the law. Member stations can download the audio file here.
