Legislators on the House floor passed an education bill to allow the transfer of special education funds to other funds. Representative Roger Hunt from Brandon says while lawmakers should use caution as this bill moves through the legislative process, more flexiblity shoud be allowed in School Districts.
Proponents of the bill say special education students are still part of the student body and will continue to benefit from the funds regardless of where they are transferred.
Another education bill was approved, today. The bill establishes standards for South Dakota teachers. Melody Schopp is with the Department of Education. She says while there are national standards in place, they only apply to new teachers within their first three years.
Schopp says senate bill 24 provides a working group to study and set teacher standards to be approved by the Board of Education. The bill passed with a unanimous vote.
