The Senate Judiciary Committee is working on several bills regarding sex offenders. The proposed legislation ranges from establishing criteria for eligibility to be removed from the sex offender list to providing a tiered sex offender registry.
Of the eight sex offender bills discussed in Thursday’s Senate Judiciary Committee meeting, Senate bill twelve was the one that held the most weight. The bill has a three-tiered offender registry. It takes into account people who may no longer constitute a threat to the public. Tier three holds the most serious offenders who have no chance of being removed off the list. Tier two is for midrange offenses which allows an offender to petition for removal after twenty-five years following incarceration. And tier one is for lesser offenses and an individual could petition to be removed from the list after ten years following incarceration. Senator Gene Abdallah says the committee is working hard to create a bill where everyone is satisfied.
“The big goal is to protect the citizens of the state and yet leave an avenue for those who deserve a second chance, to have that opportunity,” says Abdallah.
The committee will have its next hearing on the eight bills Tuesday morning.
