A bill that allows alcohol to be sold from seven AM until two AM 365 days a year failed to pass the House floor by one vote. The bill also requires an employee 21 years or older to be on the premises whenever alcohol is sold. Proponents say House Bill 1002 would streamline current laws and make them easier to understand. But opponents such as Representative Roger Hunt of Brandon disagree with selling alcohol on holidays and Sundays.
“I think that this body that represents the people in the state of South Dakota needs to always be aware of the messages that we are sending in the legislation that we’re adopting,” Hunt says. “And I think that when we are adopting this particular language as we have in this bill even though there may be the local control issue, I think we’re still sending the wrong message.”
Representative Chuck Turbiville is a sponsor of the bill. He says he intends to bring the issue up again later in the session.
