House Passes Property Owner Bill 020310 (audio)

The House of Representatives passed numerous bills on Tuesday. Legislation ranging from provisions to airport revenue bonds to municipal election revisions were voted upon on the House floor. House Bill 1126 sparked the most debate as it deals with elderly property owners.

 House bill 1126 requires property owners of a homestead who are delinquent in paying their property taxes to notify the county treasurer when they reach the age of seventy. Proponents of the bill say the notification provides protection to the elderly because it saves them from having their property sold to a third party. Representative David Lust says this bill benefits the elderly and counties.

“I think this bill represents a fair compromise between what the counties need to accomplish and that is collect taxes while balancing the issues of those that may be older, maybe fragile, giving them an opportunity to say to the county hey I’m seventy or older don’t sell my taxes and the county won’t do it, that’s all that happens here,” says Lust.

The bill now moves to a Senate Committee for further debate.
