The Senate Taxation Committee killed a bill that would revise the taxable percentage of property for nonagricultural and owner-occupied property classifications.
Supporters of the measure say that currently, homeowners and business owners are taxed at an unfair rate compared to those who own agricultural property. They say Senate Bill 129 would make things more equal. Senator Gordon Howie of Rapid City opposes the bill. He says lawmakers need to give the current system some more time to see if it works.
"Last year as you know we passed legislation that provides for a new direction where we tax agriculture based on productivity," Howie says. "And we haven't given the ink time to dry on that. And I think if we're really looking for fairness we might want to watch that for a year or so."
Lawmakers killed the bill by moving it to the 41st legislative day.
