Lawmakers have killed legislation that prohibits university presidents and other state employees from taking outside compensation. The three bills were referred to the 41st day.
The Senate State Affairs Committee referred senate bills 111 - 112 and 113 to the 41st legislative day which in essence kills the legislation unless the committee agrees to bring it back. Each bill focuses on a different state employee. Senate bill 111 - prohibits university presidents from accepting outside legislation. This refers to SDSU President David Chicoine serving on the Monsanto board of directors. Senator Gene Abdallah says committee members shouldn’t tap into issues dealing with compensation and conflict of interest with presidents of higher education.
“We have a board of Regents, we have a president. Let them figure out their problems and if they don’t, then we can do something about it,” says Abdallah.
Proponents of the bill argued that the lines needed to be drawn of what is acceptable and that the public trust is not for sale.
