Should school districts be able to sue the state? It's an issue members of the senate education committee in Pierre looked at. The resolution in question would allow voters in the next general election to decide whether or not to amend article eight of the state constitution and make such lawsuits unconstitutional. Senator Ben Nesselhuf of Vermillion says no school district may be party to any legal proceeding challenging any enactment passed by the Legislature if this resolution should pass.
Those in favor of the resolution say it makes no sense for schools to use tax dollars to sue for more tax dollars. The resolution was killed by a vote of four to three.
Alcohol sales were debated on the floor of the house today. If signed by the governor the bill would streamline who can sale alcohol and on which days it can be sold. The House of Representatives passed the measure. It now moves over the Senate.
