By Eryn ClementA revised bill passed by the state House allows communities to decide whether or not to sell alcohol on Sundays and Memorial Day but not on Christmas day.Original legislation called for lifting the state’s ban on wine and liquor sales on Sundays, Memorial Day and Christmas, then letting cities and towns opt out of that provision. Now House bill 1002 requires municipalities to pass ordinances to allow Sunday and Memorial Day sales. Representative Charles Turbiville is a proponent of this legislation. He says it allows communities to have more options and control.“The good part about this amendment is that when a municipality or a county passes an ordinance, if the people in that community or that county are opposed to this in this case it’s the sale of alcohol on any day you want, that ordinance can be referred. So we are maintaining absolute local control,” says Turbiville. The measure passed fifty to nineteen and now goes to a Senate Committee. Member stations can download audio file here.
