By Jenifer JonesA bill passed by the South Dakota House of Representatives allows high school students to take career and technical courses instead of language classes, and still qualify for the opportunity scholarship. Proponents say the bill allows students to study subjects which help them get a head start on their future careers. Representative Jason Frerichs is a sponsor of House Bill 1190. “This bill will ensure that those students can take the classes they want to take, still maintain the relevance and make it very much top notch, and it’s still a merit base scholarship to meet all those high requirements,” Frerichs says. The bill also makes a change for college students receiving the scholarship. Currently, college students must take 15 credits per semester. House Bill 1190 says students have to take 30 credits throughout the year. The bill next goes to a Senate Committee for further debate.
