By Eryn Clement Senate bill 12 continues to move through the state legislature. The Senate passed the bill which provides for a tiered system in the sex offender registry. Senate bill 12 is the main bill in a package of legislation focusing on the state’s sex offender classification. The proposal calls for classifications in three tiers. Tier three is for the worst offenders who always be listed on the sex offender registry. Individuals in tier one and two can have their names removed. More information about the sex offenders will be put on the registry by the attorney general. The additional information goes into further detail about an offender so residents know how much of a threat that person is in a neighborhood. Senator Craig Tieszen supports the measure and appreciates the fairness of the bill. “I believe that it continues to protect most importantly continues to protect the citizens of the state of South Dakota. It also allows an opportunity for those cases in which we believe there should be some opportunity at a future time for individuals to petition to make a case to come off the registry,” says Tieszen. The Senate bill passed thirty-four to zero and now moves to the House.Member stations can download the audio file here.
