By Jenifer JonesThe South Dakota Senate killed two bills that placed regulations on tanning salons in the state. Senate Bill 154 bars anyone under the age of 18 from using tanning beds. Senate bill 158 allows minors to tan with parents' permission. It also requires tanning facilities give customers written notice of potential dangers of tanning. It has several other requirements as well. Senator Sandy Jerstad of Sioux Falls is a sponsor of the bill. She says people need to be made aware of problems tanning can cause. "We're just asking for honesty and education for the public. Let the public know and then the public can decide," Jerstad says.Opponents of the bills say they amount to government overregulation.Member stations can download the audio file here.
