Black Hills Playhouse Measure Passes 02/19/10 (audio)

The Senate State Affairs committee passed Senate bill 102 Fridaywhich continues the lease agreement at the Black Hills Playhouse located in Custer State Park. The theater’s future has been in jeopardy since the state refused to renew the least last April. Due to a hoghouse amendment made to Senate bill 102, the Playhouse lease is extended until 2019. Supporters of the bill say this piece of legislation is the final opportunity to assemble the resources needed to make the theater a long-term viable facility. The Game Fish and Parks Department has voiced concern of structural issues concerning the theater. Jim Hood spoke on behalf of the Black Hills Playhouse. He says the Playhouse board is committed to remedying code violations by launching a major capital improvement fund drive to make necessary repairs. However, donors must know their money will have a lasting effect.
“In order to pursue donors, the playhouse must be able to assure those donors who wish to fund significant capital improvements that a long term lease for the playhouse is in place. The burden is clearly upon the Black Hills Playhouse,” says Hood.
The senate bill now moves to the House after a six to three vote.
