By Eryn ClementA measure that prohibits discrimination in life and health insurance policies based on domestic violence passed in the Senate Commerce committee Tuesday. Supporters of the bill say insurance policy discrimination against victims of domestic violence may or may not be an issue. But they add this bill is created to eliminate the barriers for victims if they exist. Dianna Miller is a registered lobbyist for the South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault. She says by passing this legislation, lawmakers are making a positive step towards helping victims.“When we have a situation such as this that could exist, you victimize the victim again because they have to have access to health insurance and life insurance and things like that to make their family grow and prosper,” says Miller.House bill 1189 passed unanimously and now moves to the Senate floor for further debate.
