The state House of Representatives killed a bill that appropriates nearly $5.5 million for the Sanford Lab at Homestake.
Governor Mike Rounds says the money would have helped bridge a funding gap until the National Science Foundation decides on financing for the project. The plan received 45 yes votes and 23 no votes, falling just two votes short of a two-thirds majority. Rounds says the one-time funds proposed are perfect for the project, and says its unfortunate the bill did not pass. He says the laboratory is crucial for the future of South Dakota as it has potential for economic benefits as well as world-class research and education.
