The House State Affairs Committee passed a proposed constitutional amendment Wednesday. The amendment guarantees the right to vote by secret ballot in any political election or effort to organize a union. Opponents say the bill is being promoted by an out-of-state business group and federal law would supersede any state law or constitutional provision. Senator David Knutson spoke in favor of the bill and says the right to a secret ballot must be protected.
“The secret ballot in all elections is the heart of our democracy. We can in fact as a state protect our fundamental rights. SJR 3 clearly broadens these secret ballot protections for our citizens. It's good legislation let's let the people vote,” says Knutson.
The measure has already been approved by the State Senate. If passed in the full House and signed by the governor, it will be put to a public vote in the November election.
