U.S. Representative Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin spoke to the state legislature today. She says it's been a tough year for congress with the recession and slow progress on health care reform. Despite this Herseth-Sandlin says congress has done important work that directly affects South Dakota especially with the farm bill. She says the farm bill is an important safety net for Agriculture Producers and the entire state's economy.
"Whether it be the folks in the northeast for which the crop-insurance program is the most important part of the safety net now," Herseth-Sandlin says. "Whether it's in times when our commodity prices are lower and the counter cyclical payments and other support programs and other support programs to weather the ups and downs in a volatile marketplace particularly with some of the speculation that was going on in the last couple of years."
Herseth-Sandlin says it's important for congress members to work with the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture so the farm bill is implemented in an effective manner.
She says another important piece of legislation for South Dakota is the Tribal Law and Order Act. She says she's been working with Senators Thune, Johnson and other lawmakers to continue advancing the Tribal Law and Order Act through congress.
"You know I think it just goes without saying that whether you live in Kyle, whether you live in Eagle Butte, whether you live in Aberdeen every family has the equal right to have a basic sense of security in their homes and in their communities," Herseth-Sandlin says.
Herseth-Sandlin says it's important for congress to allocate enough resources for officers and facilities to combat crime on reservations.
